I was visiting the pet store for my usual weekly supply of rats, mice and crickets when one of the employees asked me if i wanted his 2 and a half year old tegu. After doing my research I got her a week later and learned that he had been feeding her a spoon full of wet cat food once a week. i looked at him like he was crazy and he told me that she was his ex wifes and he had only been feeding her the way she told him to. I went out and bought all kinds of fruits and veggies and meal worms and ground turkey so i could get a feel for what she would like to eat... and she wouldn't touch any of it. for nearly a month she hardly ate any thing that i gave her, but she seemed friendly enough and had enough energy. but i finally gave up and gave her the cat food.... she ate the whole can. my question is, 'Is this normal? Can tegus survive and live a long healthy life on cat food? should i try to ween her towards other types of food by slowly mixing in more with the cat food?'
